Surface concrete floating structures : /home/

The colonization of the oceans will develop along multiple axes, as well on the surface, in form of concrete honeycomb platforms and shell structures, as below the surface, in form of tubular pressure resistant structures.

The surface floating structures will be flat raft structures in honeycomb building technique similar to the following examples.

Structures floating on the ocean surface will have to deal with climate and wave issues like the "Draupner wave" which leads to the development of the Ramform Platform as the most suitable offshore ocean platform. Only big scale platforms that match or exceed ship size can deal with open ocean waves.

For smal scale living space on the ocean in the size of a family apartment - submerged habitats will be the only feasible option. The baseline for making ocean colonization feasible will be, that the cost per squaremeter real estate is compareable to real estate prices on land. This excludes cities in naval steel technology along the lines of oil platforms and ships very much. It also excludes glass fiber and other exotics as building material. Only concrete shell and honeycomb structures can do the job. Concrete shells provide living space on land in a adequate cost frame and have a proven long term resistance record in the offshore industry. Tubular concrete shell structures like Troll A have been at sea for 30 years, and are still in top shape. So 200 years of service life comparable to a land building is completly in reach for a oceanic concrete structure.

Submerged Concrete Structures /home/

Submerged pressure resistent concrete structures have been around, for quite a while now, in a wide array of engineering fields, ranging from oil-gas platforms, underwater tunnels, to hollow bridge pylones. The hydrostatic waterpressure of 300m is a frequently managed engineering field where good long term studies over decades of service life, are available, for hundreds of existing structures.

Some key examples for submerged tubular concrete structures are:

The general experience with those structures is, that concrete is a excellent material for marine construction - the servicelife of concrete structures offshore exceeds 200 years - maintenanace free - the depth range manageable by positive buoyant tubular structures is about 1200m (studies available). The destruction depth range for spheres is below 2000m

This sets marine concrete structures in a class apart from structures built from traditional steel, which has a maintainance free service life of "a few months" at sea - and can only be be kept in good shape under a strict gritblasting and maintenance shedule - to extend its service life to 2 decades - at best.

This leads to the clear conclusion that structures that need to stay in the water and can not be sent to shipyards for maintenance, has to be constructed out of concrete instead of steel - this is especially true for structures that are supposed to pave the way for "permanent human presence" on the oceans in the sense of permanent ocean colonization. After all 70% of the planet surface is water, and 99% of the habitable living space volume is water. With a population growth of 1 billion per decade, ocean colonization is a urgent need as coastal cities run out of waterfront space. The key players that take on the new frontier of ocean colonization will open a new world of business opportunities.

Living in a submarine yacht (captain nemo lifestyle compares to normal yachtie lifestyle) /home/

Captain Nemo living style and business - read more in the concretesubmarine.com forum section : "captain nemo float out"

In general a moder Nautilus would enable its owner to adapt a quite normal yachtie living style with a couple of "additional benefits". The idea that the owner of the Nautilus would live submerged in eternal darkness in a claustrophobic ambient is a concept error we need to picture that right. In fact the Nautilus would be able to explore sea areas islands and beaches, that are not safe for normal yachts as they do not have protected harbors nearby. The Nautilus would also be independent from the "hurricane season" that forces normal yachts out of wide sea areas seasonaly. It would be a "living space bubble" that is safe in "any seastate" inclusing in a Draupner Wave or a scale 5 hurricane.

. . .. . . .
Comment on a seasteading forum... "who wants to live submerged"

Answer:

I doubth like you, that there will be a lot of people that voluntaryly adopt submarine confinement as a desireable style of living.

It may be one out of hundred who really would like to live disconnected from the surface, producing oxigen from the seawater wandering submerged and seperated from mankind trough the worlds oceans captain nemo style.

The typical owner would handle a submersible living space bubble habitat (i avoid the word submarine due to the misleading coffin perception) as a simple yacht that is in almost all of its aspects a yacht, just absolute storm safe, seasickness free, burglar safe, and maintenance cost free.

Like other yachties you would not be the whole day enclosed inside your boat. You would form part of a yachtie community anchored in the bay of a caribbean island.

In the morning you would row over to the beach meet with people from the other boats, have a beach grill, a coconut, a island adventure - you would only return to your boat to have a pleaseant night sleep in a king size bed and a freshwater shower.

There are differences in lifestyle to other yachties. For example when you leave your boat in the morning (all of your family - nobody wants to stay and watch the family home) you just close the hatch - so your living space becomes absolute burglar safe.

The other yachties always live a bit preocupied about their boat, is somebody breaking in to steal your nav equipment?, is the weather on the anchorplace changing smashing the boat against the reef?,  - so they tend to live "in sight" of the boat.

You on the other hand, when get an offer for this dream on week trip - take it - when you return you will find your stuff well protected inside your living space bubble - just exactly as you left it there - breaking in trough a hatch is like breaking into a banksafe - nobody can deploy the necessary (heavy industrial) tools on a anchorplace.

Another situation where your life is really different to a yachtie is when you are together with several sailing and motor yachts anchored in front of this pristine beach of a unhabitated island. Somebody has a radio and spreads the news that tropical cyclon Bertha category 4 is closing in. Now it becomes clear why this beautiful island was uninhabitated in first place - no save harbor miles around.

Some yachts rush out into the dark of the night to make it by the speed of their expensive engines to the next safe spot - just to find that it is cramped with poorly anchored industrial barges that tend to come loose in a storm and grind everything in their way to pieces.

Smaller yachts send the kids for the nearest hotel to be safe and go for the mangroves to bring out several lines to the trunks and fight it out. They can make it as long as the storm surge is moderate.

You on the other hand just close your hatch drink a coffee watch TV - no need to leave the anchor place. If things become bumpy flood your ballast tanks and lay your bubble some 5m down on the sandy lagoon bottom until the storm has passed over you. You and your family are safe as in a underground bunker.

You could take advantage of the shit weather and the sudden absence of all your yachtie friends and make a few miles to visit the next spot. You sail out directly into the storm - trim your living space bubble at snorkel depth - you leave the coffee cup on the table, you watch the weather the sea and ship traffic with your snorkel top camara - but your comfort is not affected by the storm.

Your live will also be a bit different when aproaching a cramped marina with no space for "another boat" - you will always be the "most exotic boat" that draws the attention and marina owners will love to asign you a nice place to stay - maybe for free. While it may be difficult to have privacy in a cramped marina on a surface boat - you close your hatch and you have it.

Your living space bubble will also be different in terms of aircon, comfort electrics, and loading capacity.

For example a yacht in the caribbean can spend dozends of dollars a day in aircon to make the climate below a sun heated deck just bearable. The seawater around your hull maintains the inside at 22 degee with no aircon need.

Yacht owners sometimes go crazy with the vibrations and noise of the small generator that keeps the battery and freezer alive. Noise dampening and vibration is most of all a function of bulkhead weight - bad news for "leight weight yacht outfitting" - you have your generator behind 20cm concrete - complete silence guaranteed.

Yachties are always short of loading capacity for freshwater food, tools, equipment.

You on the other hand have dozends of tons loading capacity this gives you not only the freedom of a much longer range compared with similar sized surface yachts - it also allows you to make a living as a trader - moving cold beer in hotel quantity to remote locations.

interior design of a submarine yacht /home/
Any interior design seen in business jets or yachts is possible - plus a whole lot more - as you do not have strikt weight limits in a submersible living space bubble. So feel free to add a jaccuzzi - also there is no need to bolt everything down as the living space bubble stays on "even keel" under all ocean conditions this opens the possibility of using standard chairs and other "off the shelf solutions" form the standard housing market what makes the outfitt quite economic. Just compare a standard stove with the (several times more expensive) "yacht stove" that avoids pots jumping around in "heavy seas".

To get a picture how big the living space inside a submersible living space bubble is, how light comes in, check this video: www.youtube.com/watch - notice that light comes from above what makes interior design much easier than in a business jet (much less artificial light required)

We can do the hull for 331 Euro/ ton of displacement. The hull seen in the video above (18m / 200 ton) is for 66.200 Euro -

In general terms " semi/submersible living space bubbles " seem to be a great and economic way to independent mobile seasteading taking weather and wave concerns out of the equation allowing scaleability from mobile home size to city size.

Testing segmented concrete flat float concepts /home/

Segmented platforms made from concrete cubes prepared in a minimum cost building site. We tested the concept for exploring the possibility of modular islands as suggested in seasteading.org - basicly we are doing "Spiral Island on steroids" using concrete elements instead of plastic bottles.

The setup is based on a 5000USD/month building site that can put our a cube per day. This means we can create floating real estate at a rate of 1 squaremeter per day at a cost of 166 USD per day (or square meter).

Those prices are signifficanlty below average European/US real estate costs.

Originally we wanted a service/construction barge for our submarine yacht project afloat outfit but found soon that a lot of other applications for a maintenance free barge with a 200 year service life come to mind ...

If you do it right floating concrete structures of only 5cm wallthickness can be seeping free and bone dry on the inside - no coating required.

Basicly we have set a practical base to take the technology of the giant floating concrete structures that are currently used in oil/gas industry and scale them down to a size that opens a wide range of possiblility in waterfront development, tourism, adventure hotels, and small scale service and living platforms.

Two concepts emerge:

The segmented flat float structure and the submerged living space bubble concept.

Submerged protection - how deep must a structure be submerged to be protected from waves? /home/

When talking about protection from wave damage we should have clear that one thing is being protected from wave hazard and sea sickening movements what happens inmediatly when you are submerged - and the other thing is how deep in the ocean you might notice the pass of big waves.

Wave hazards come from 2 factors:

1) breaking crests that can hit a structure with hundreds of tons of force

2) Hog and Sag, bending and torsion, forces which appear when a ship is supported by water (and bouyancy) at one end and in the air at the other end. Those forces can break a ship or lead to fatigue. They make a ship stamp and roll.

If you leave the math and wave amplitude thing apart, you can easyly understand that neither wave crests nor hog and sag can exist anymore as soon as you have a thin water layer closing above you, even when this layer is just a foot deep. The structure will be supported uniformly by water at its whole length and this uniform support leads inmediatly to a much calmer behavior.

This is what a diver experiences when he jumps from a rocking surface boat  - there is inmediatly this incredible calm uniformly supported floating status when you go below the surface it dos not  start gradually dozends of meters down - it is just below the surface. No wave is HITTING you anymore no wave is pushing you and your equpment around as it is the case when you swim on the surface. The only thing you experience below is a kind of current that changes direction with every wave. So you can "percieve the wave movement" when you have a visual reference to the sea bottom. If you don`t have this visual reference you will not notice the movement.

I know a lot of divers that are suceptible to seasickness in a rolling diveboat and they are always the first to jump overboard - once you are below seasickness is gone.

I experienced this in extreme form at Malpelo Island which is a island in the pacific 500 km off the coast of Colombia between Cocos and Galapagos - you have those real big pacific waves comming in directly towards a volcanic rock face. There is no doubt that any ship no matter the thickness of its steel plating would be hacked to small pieces within minutes. The divers jump overboard far from the rocks and swimm below the surface directly towards this rockfaces - this is where all those beautiful fishes are. You hang there 1-2m below the "hackzone" relaxed enjoy the smooth waiven of the waves comming in, you can feel the real big suckers in your ears, as the waterdepth changes while the crest goes trough. It is a wonderful place to mediate about the fact why nature never developed a surface swimming animal for the open sea - maybe living below is just so much better.

The other experience i can contribute is the experience i had with the submarine yacht prototype - while i had the sub on its anchorplace and was tooling around inside i closed the hatch to avoid questions from courious visitors - i was there for an hour or so and when i opened the hatch i noticed that a storm had come up, several trees felt down, sailing yachts in the 30 foot range where calling SOS, and the local rescue crew was busy to assist. - I did not even notice the storm. And the hull was still on the surface exposing the sail (tower) and the central rounded part of the hull a bit above the surface. Obviously this did not present enough wave and weather attack surface to make the hull rock and roll.

Diver below breaking waves
Structural weakness of a whale body no stifness required as supported by buoyancy

The difference between being hit by the waves on the surface and being supported completly by liquid is paramount - this is why whales have structural weak bodies compared to a ship, they can live with a lot less structure.

Modern shipbuilding is including ballast tanks into the design to deepload the vessel when necessary to avoid excessive bending in the violent surface layer and get a more uniform hull support.

The question how deep is deep enough is most of all a practical question -  i would say a few feet is enough for leaving your coffee cup on the table in 99% of the sea states you will experience, 10m will be enough for leaving the coffee cup on the table in the perfect storm. What means that there is no need to go beyond a depth where a decent snorkel is still possible.

I know that there are people theroizizing that big waves reach deep down in the ocean - the point is theirs hazardous and seasickening action depends on intermittent air/iquid contacts with the hull  - and those are gone inmediatly below the surface. What is left below is waiven that does no harm and no seasickness - any diver can tell you that.

Concrete floating platform as service station /home/

Many special ships, dril rigs, and similar structures - do not fit well into the existing ship building and maintenance and harbor infrastructure which frequently do not have sufficiently deep access channels.

A concrete platform can be used as service station for afloat repair and building of that kind of structures and draw money from that service.

This floating concrete jetty above was specificly built to service submarines that need deep water to be serviced properly.

Combine submerged living space with open water fish farming /home/

Be safe and seasickness free in open ocean conditions while producing sea food for a high growth market. The combination of submerged living space and established oceanic aquaculture like aquapod and tuna rearing opens a world of business opportunities.

When we speak of Ocean colonization we should look for a model that has done this before - there is one mother nature. Mother nature gives us a couple of interesting lections...

It is interesting that there is literally not a single animal swimming and living on the ocean surface. Animals live in the waterbody (fish, whales, etc.) or they live in the air above the ocean (birds)  - they use the surface for short stay but not for "permanent living".

If evolution has not found a way to colonize the ocean surface - there should be solid reasons why that is so.  The most obvious is that the surface is the place where ocean and athmosphere have their most violent interchange.

Maybe we have been too quick by dismissing submerged structures as first choice when talking about ocean colonization.

"Plate seastead" large and small scale /home/

The plate seastead has a good relation of squaremeters living space created vs building material used. So it is a good solution for big sized concrete floats that can survive in the high seas just depending on their freeboard and so not need the living space all side enclosed. The drawback of the concept is that the "dike" (seawall) around the plate has to have a freeboard height of about 16m as a minimum. This limits the concept to city block sized applications when operating in the high seas. Like a container ship a plate seastead would feature no deck and basicly be a open hull with a high freeboard. Small plates (like the lens habitat) would need a deck.

Catamaran multihull concrete float /home/

It makes VERY little cost difference what shape the concrete float has. I found that it costs pretty much the same to form a blimp shape, a plate shape, a cube, a triangular shape. Surfaces curved in 2 directions should be prefered due to structural strength and streamlining. So why not make a heavy concrete catamaran, trimaran, that can move very fast, cost of building is the same anyhow. Building a catamaran the float will also be easier accepted as a "standard boat" and is less prone to third party interference. (finally it is still a "have seen before boat" that has an easier play on the "permit negation front"). In this case the word catamaran should not be understood as a superlight superfast carbon fiber structure (as usual) but more as the bambus houseboats and ferryboats above. We tested chambered concrete floats that could replace the "bambus bundle" in the asian floating house concept. The floating ship repair facility in the last picture could be a chambered flat float (slow) or a catamaran concept (fast).

Building a floating house in one piece and take it to water is not easy - discussion : seasteading.org /home/

...

To have a clear idea what is ivolved in building and launching a structure of that nature you will enjoy the following video of a cube style floating concrete structure of a similar size and nature..(.video of building and launch) .

See also a video of the wave response of  the structure when floating offshore as a coastaguard watchpost (video)

Most of all check the structure that is necessary to perform the launch of the float ( keep in mind that the cost of the launch structure is higher then the building cost of the concrete cube itself ).

Watch also in the second video the movements of the finished structure (with very moderate waves) - and think about how pleasant living on board such a structure might be for "average joe".

Conclusion 1: a flat float structure must have a extension that exceeds 35 m to be a platform that has "housing quality" in moderate ocean conditions.

Conclusion 2: Concrete cast flat raft structures are a fine solutions for "big scale seasteading" (above 35 m island diameter)  not so ideal for small scale seasteading ... (below 35m island size).

Conclusion 3: we are in search of a structure that does not move in moderate waves and is safe in all ocean conditions although it is not bigger than apartment size.

You need to go BIG (on surface) or you go BELOW  to match the desired comfort criteria for smaller structures.

Seasteading apply concrete shell structures - oceanic house floating bases / limitations /home/

....Unfortunatly steel floats barges, old ships, oil rigs, barril floats, etc... are only "appearently viable" real estate options for people who have no idea (or forgot to calculate ) what the maintenance cost of a steel float involves. Not even oil/gas industry can afford the elevated cost of the maintenance shedules that are required to keep such structures afloat . This is why they are switching to concrete floats instead. Floto would be by far better off in using catamaran concrete floats as the ones built as a experimental pilot project in cartagena.

This kind of floats used like the bambus bundle in the asian housboat concept have a maintenance free service life of 200 years. That is the kind of base you can build real estate on. Another option for a "everlasting base" for a floating house is a segmented concrete float base like the "cube assembly float" .

The novelty of the equatorian coast guard base consists in taking the widley used "house on a concrete float" concept  from protected waterspaces into a "quite unprotected" oceanic environment.

The video shows that although it works - they seem to have quite unpleasent movements. The base has about 20m island diameter.  So putting together the evidence we have a 20m diameter island that rocks too much and we have a 40x100m island (nkossa) that does just fine.

Conclusion :  living on a floating platform considerably smaller than Nkossa in open water sucks - but it can work in a protected bay.

What CAN work for smaller structures in open ocean is going below the waves.

     http://imulead.com/tolimared/concretesubmarine/image/submarine-yacht-interior-design-suggestions.jpg

If you break it down into real estate figures. A cubic meter of living space in a surface float house and in a "below surface living space bubble" have exactly the same cost - but the comfort level (when exposed to open sea conditions) below surface is by far higher as long as the structure size is smaller than city block size.

.... seasteading Inc. would mass produce squaremeter floating structure of that kind...

John Blow would get a offer to purchase floating living space at suburban housing cost and build his own version of a floating dream house on it.

Seasteading Inc would cover his back on the authority permit front  and take care of the general infrastructure, supply lines and transport - just as the development company does in land based settlements. Seasteading would start as "marina development with focus on housing instead on yachts.

finally grow towards the high seas, and towards large scale structures and floating industry as well on surface as below mobile and stationary all concepts blending together in a loose raft up that resembles a kind of oceanic port city.

The problem was not feasibility - the problem is financing - so we ended up talking about the smallest possible first step - and it seems to be a "model housing unit" to produce a general understanding for the livestyle.

We should not get stuck in promoting one floating concept and dismiss all the others. We should move all floating concepts that have potential to produce "affordable and enjoyable living space at sea" forward.

This is why i am not only experimenting with the submerged bubble living space, but also with surface float concepts like the mobile catamaran float and the segmented island flat float concept, as well as plate seastead concepts, and grid seastead concepts like the seastar concept.

It will not be either or - it will be a "all of them".

What i try is to establish a feasible business on the crossroads of what some day in the future might be the seasteading core technology - this should be something that is a interesting business plan for a venture capitalist - i hope things will become dynamic in this segment  and we have people with adequate means to make things happen join our project.

Unfortunatly we are currently limited to a funding reality of 5000 USD/month - or less... that limits the capacity of comming up with seastead solutions and lifestyle offers the "big press is talking about" somewhat...

Seasteading Inc / East India Company / American Railroad - link - /home/

Seasteading Inc. would have a similar function as the East India Company or the railroad in the american settlement of the wild west.

The east india company created the trail and the matrix the settlers, the merchandise and the business men could follow . In our case we need to create the solid platforms where business of all kind can settle and take place. The East India Company used a combination of sail ship and trade posts. We should use a combination of concrete float technology and real estate development.

It is always a business venture combined with the exploitation of a newly available technology  that pushes the settlement of new frontiers.... it has been the sail ship, the railroad, in the past.

What we need now is to get the financial power of the East India Company behind the concrete float technology to develop the ocean frontier.

Create a real estate deal - link - /home/

I think the best way to get started is to cook it down to a simple real estate deal. You produce 1 squaremeter of useable space at a cost of USD 166 and you can sell that space at a price of at least 2000 USD.

Any real estate agent can understand that business, any investor and any bank can understand it. It looks feasible and desireable business in any business plan.

This is why we should not go with "complicated turnkey concepts" but simply try to establish a fabrication site for "floating real estate squaremeters".

Creating oceanfront real estate by building sandbanks is a fairly common and well understood business that is going off on large scale in Dubai and other locations. It is a central paradigm of the real estate business that space can not be created but is limited - especially oceanfront space.

Concrete float solutions expand the sellable real estate to the water - this should be a desireable business field for investors that normally have no affinity to "boating" of any kind.

So to start with i would just sistematicly mass produce floating "empty building lots on the water" and offer them for sale. This is a simple deal, with a never ending pool of possible customers, easy handle for established real estate businesses.

The bay of cartagena for example is a hurricane free water space that is completly open for that kind of developments. A wide and empty protected waterspace surrounded by skyscrappers (some built by donald trump) - ready to do business.

My current development budget for floating installations in cartagena is limited to USD 5000/month. As you have seen on the pictures i can only crank out a few experimental squaremeters of floating real estate in small scale pilot projects in this finance frame.

But even so i already got requests for float out all kind of touristic and industrial installations. If i had a couple of floating platforms ready for sale at this moment i could sell them all...

It is of essence for the "guts understanding of the business" that buyers can step on their "empty building lot" and understand that this is not a kind of "boat" - this is solid real estate ground - ocean view.

No design -link- /home/

shred, we do need no design. We need to be taken serious in our discussion, and your last post is not necessaryly helping that people read this, follow the argument and come on board.  What keeps seasteading from happening is not the lack of a DESIGN - it is the lack of money for building solutions where living and business on the water can happen.

When the railroad opened the west for settlement the design of the trains and the houses was a "no theme"  at all. What was important was opening the space for settlement. A simple floating squaremeter space production site is enough to open the waterspace for human use.

Real estate business needs just "building lots" - not necessarily "designed houses". The idea that seasteading is a "Design contest for a winning design that must be applied to everybody" is a concept error.

Seasteading is an effort to bring serious people to a new business field. The best way to get there is to offer something simple that a existing real estate agent can understand. "Building lots where there where none" is such a simple thing.

We look for a floating private island that by definition leaves the use as open as possible so it can be offered and adapted to a large amount of different "potential customers" for all kind of private and business uses - like a building lot - we do not look for a final pre selected house design to be applied to all seasteaders. The more design you put into it the smaller becomes the market to which you can sell.

something like that is what you can sell to almost everybody who needs space. We do not need a design, we need a starting point and a ongoing real estate deal - that is what we need.

Oceanic Port Design - do not narrow - link - /home/

... - why i postulate the "NON DESIGN" is mostly because i find the design discussion is leading us inevitably into a bad direction where we point our attention in a direction that is not healthy for a seasteading movement.

Seasteading can only work as a business when a seastead can function in a wide array of different business fields very much like a oceanic port city. In a oceanic port city there is no place for standardisation of dock connections and predesigned lego sistems.

A oceanic port has to deal by definition with almost anything that floats , comes along, for doing trade, business, tourism, etc... from a cruiseship to a sailing yacht.

If you put a "bergstead technology only" sign on your development you cut your lifeline from the very beginning - this is why it will not happen "lego design" but " wild multiple design". Narrowing design to a single design approach is not only useless it is DANGEROUS . Picking a design or a range of designs is not corresponding to a autocratic designer discussion forum - it is driven by selection and market forces.

Connectors between ships and docks are already invented and in use. The standardisation was introduced by the container. The seastead would just function as a floating dock or load terminal as usual.

Nothing is deadlier for seasteading than cut off the multicultural float togehter that is implemented by existing harbors and replace it with monolithic condo ideas.

Unfortunatly the design discussion has always drifted that way - so let me postulate NON DESIGN as the fundamental design. Just put concrete floats out there, mix land and sea based business develop the core technology make real estate deals.

Beerstead on a Catamaran float - link - catamaran flat float segmented /home/

Beerstead (floating barge for takle bite and hamburger) it is a real world application with a feasible, tested business plan, and a potential to grow.

I find it interesting that Bowe opted for a catamaran float solution - obviously for 2 reasons mobility and stability.

A (chambered) catamaran float element built from concrete to replace the (fast rotting) bambus bundle in the asian houseboat concept is one of my favorite concepts too. The float element shown above (built in one of our pilot projects) could be the base for a "segmented catamaran" that can grow with the business when more and more boats come along for cool beer and hamburger. The flat deck is also a great feature to have tables and chairs like a normal restaurant.

Beerstead could end up being someday something like the last picture....but for now optimizing the existing beerstead model introduced by "Conchy Bowe" and "Dangerous John" seems to be a excellent low budget starting point.

The base element : catamaran concrete float - a chambered concrete float element built from concrete that replaces the (fast rotting) bambus bundle in the asian floating house concept. The catamaran floating element is a maintenance free base with a 200 year service life you can build a house on that lasts, and maintains a high grade of mobility.  You can use it for a floating village development or for a mobile platform capeable of oceanic travel. Cost universe 331 Euro/ cubic meter of displacement.

Give it to the moken people - they will seastead - give it to the polinesian they will settle the pacific.

Plate floating Element - see more - /home/

Seasteading starter suggestion 2

Floating concrete structures in plate shape of a fairly big diameter (about 70m ) have been performed already. It is quite obvious that the structure when done in industrial size can be built with traditional methods of concrete casting. The key question how much freeboard you need for a structure that features no deck is pretty much answered by container ships that don't feature decks either. (Around 15m).

What we tested in our R&D site in cartagena is how small could you actually go for building a plate float. The answer is in the first picture that features a plate made of special fiber concrete.  A family house sized plate (picture 2) is in the range of possibilities but must feature a deck as a 15m freeboard is not achieveable for small structures. The plate is a great way to build city sized low wind profile structures that have low requirement for locomotion and station keeping. In therory a whole country on a plate seastead does already exist - the netherlands - most of the terrain is actually under the waterline protected by dikes that avoid a "filling of the plate depression"... floating cities and countries based on the floating plate priciple are not so "utopic" after all.

Sell inmediatly scale up in a bay - see more - /home/
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

ellmer ur saying that people would buy modular platforms from u if u had some to sell, right now?  im ready to come help u build them right now. ... lets go build something!  more importantly, lets sell something!

Shred, yes that is exactly what i am saying. To have a clear picture you must imagine the bay of cartagena as a giant calm water space hurricane free. You need about an hour in boat to cross the bay. This is a lot of space open for development.

The shoreline is cramped with skyscrappers shipyard industry, tourism. The bay is so big and so empty that port authorities allow 30 days free anchoring for 150m containerships - which is quite unique in the caribbean.

My current management problem is to put a partnership together that will allow me to build and float out a first segmented floating lot. I have customers ready to buy for a finished floating base, but i have no "upfront money" to build one. This brings us back to the known problem that we have to start on the smallest possible scale and work our way up over time.

As i have built working submarines from concrete already people start to believe me when i claim that i can build floating concrete structures of almost any kind.

Ideally every project would leave the money in the pocket and the credibility to get the right partners to step up to the next level. After comming to the last picture of the series - floating the whole thing out from a quiet bay as the bay of cartagena and become oceanic - being a business focus in itself should be within reach.

I apreciate your offer to help but at the moment the cost of transferring a life from one country to another is not in reach of the budget frame i have available. I am going to build and sell a couple of the things in picture 1-3 to get the business wheel rolling...

Freeboard - see more - /home/

...I'm a little concerned about freeboard. ..

I like to start all freeboard discussions for flat rafts with a image of the Kon-Tiki this flat raft made it over the pacific with only inches of freeboard and the hut on top did not get washed overboard !

On the other hand a modern containership that moves quickly trough cyclon areas to deliver freight has a freeboard of  15m as design requirement.

Where between those numbers lays the area where you stop to be concerned is basicly a question of faith and location.

I give you a couple of pictures that shed light on the freeboard question. Glomar CDI platform was built for arctic conditions, Nkossa for open sea in tropical areas, Adriatic for the mediterranean, containership freeboard, common marina floating walkway installations in storm conditions, kon-tiki crossing the pacific...

As long as you have a deck that can take a "deck awash" and a direct wave hit - yacht design considers 1m and less of freeboard sufficient for open ocean...

psychology and engineering seasteading comment /inicio/

... The most extreme problems faced by floating seasteads do not exist for submerged seasteads. That should tell you something right there.

The aversion to submerged structures is a consequence of an almost complete lack of familiarity among the general population on how to address the engineering challenges posed by such an environment, despite the fact that those challenges are much less expensive and difficult to solve than the challenges that more closely resemble building an earthquake proof skyscraper.

Trying to live in a floating seastead smaller than a million dollar oil-rig platform is like trying to pilot an "ultra-light" plane in to a hurricane.

In contrast, the smaller the submarine pressure housing, the easier it is to build.

Two problems to solve: - the engineering  - and  the fear of being submerged.

As tuavision said - the engineering of hydrostatic water pressure is easy and not expensive - to get the psychology right we should start "pictureing" a submerged living space right. It has nothing to do with a "claustrophobic dark ambient" and is as correctly said mostly a "lack of familiarity problem"...

Maybe seasteading can be seen in its core as a "settling in unfamiliar space" problem. It has been discussed that seasteading is the first large scale test field for the last frontier of space colonization. So lets be a bit audacious in the concepts and create living space shells (both mobile and stationary) that are worth the effort...

sub proyect (seasteading comment) /home/

caveden

This submarine you show, is it yours? Or did you do it for some client?

If it's yours, do you intend to live in it, being the first seasteader maybe?

It is a proyect that we did for a californian customer (raw building of the hull) - he is going to use the hull as his private yacht.  For now he is not planning to live on it permanently in open ocean as he has a new landjob. But certainly the boat would allow a "captain nemo lifestyle" being independent for long time periods in open ocean, unaffected by any weather and wave condition. Wandering globally between resouces and "nice stay remote island" locations without consideration of hurricane seasons.

For me the most important thing is that we proved with this project that we can actually create that kind of boat in large size in a price universe of 331 Euro per cubic meter of living space -  which is within the living space cost that is usual in urban settlement.

What we hope at the moment is that somebody who has signifficant more budget available (than the 70K our californian customer invested into his boat) falls in love with the concept and calls us, to start a even more impressive proyect  that will cast jules vernes visions in a modern day submerged mega yacht.

In the meantime we are working on local floating real estate development projects in the bay of cartagena.

interference factors (comment seasteading) /home/

elspru

Ellmer

Congratulations on getting to the waterline!

What are the "interference factors" that you've come across?

are they "Mayor" problems?...

As you know we build that hull in colombia - in some way colombia could have the worst possible political condition to build a private submarine you can imagine. To get the overall picture (see here).

Happens that exactly in the week we reached the waterline with our hull the first real submarines cartering to that business where found.  As everybody can imagine this created some waves.

At the moment there is a discussion process that ivolves different opinion fronts.

One front is following the argument that "if we let happen that a private submarine is launched, tested, and sails around, in colombian waters, while we have that problem, the international yellow press will have a feast with us, and we will be asked to hand over our jobs".

The other front is : "we need to be on top of the developments and the best way to intercept sub is another sub we should embrace the opportunity we can not stop or forbid technology anyhow ...".

The outcome of an intent to consolidate those opinion fronts was that authorities allowed us to deliver the hull to its owner, not as originally planned on its own keel, but instead as deckload on a ship. Unfortunatly this is not a technical possible solution.

To crown the whole thing the shipyard we are in, went down the drain, was sold, and a new owner is comming soon...

For now we have to let calm down the waves and see how we can proceed.

seasteading needs to be local (comment) /home/

Why don't you post a for sale notice here and see what happens.

Steve, i can not sell small floats internationally, and i doubth that this forum is a channel that is used by many potential customers for floating real estate in the bay of cartagena where i am situated now. Seasteading is at least in the beginning when the floats are still small and low mobility a completly local business.

My plan for scale up is more or less described in the picture series below...

Cartagena grassroot approach (comment) /home/

sda1950

Wil

Is Cartagena the best place for your business then?  Perhaps the USA or the Med would be closer to customers?

Steve

Steve, i would go anywhere if i had a project to do. In fact i recently tried to contact Sir Richard Branson with a suggestion to build big yacht submarines and futuristic undewater tourism cities on Neckar Island - have not got an answer yet as you probably can imagine the man is busy.

The bay of cartagena is the best  "natural bay feature" on the continent this is why the spanish started their conquest of the continent from here. It is hurricane free, so in terms of hardware it is certainly a excellent place.

Caribbean countries also have a good culture of not overregulate new things out of existance. A bearable density of "control institutions" of any kind, in fact building on the water (as long as you are not considered vessel and do not implement changes to the litoral) is for all practical purpose "not regulated at all" ...

I would consider USA and the Mediterranenan "harder to work places" in general terms. When it comes to float out something that exceeds 20 m diameter in size.

In a earlier phase i considered the building of "mobile solutions" that would be built in low labor cost countries and delivered to high cost countries a good business strategy - but i would incline to "local waterfront development" as a first step at the moment, because i got a unexpected high level of interest for this.

This may be a "local phenomenon" here in cartagena or it may be generalized - i have not tested it in other building sites in pilot projects yet.

The question for which world area do you incline does only come up when there exists equal possibilities to start a project in different world areas. My situation is that i can not transfer my projects neither to USA not Med because i do not have the financial means to do so.

I have a small support base and a favorable business environment here in cartagena to do the first necessary steps which are experimenting with the base floating elements and then step up to sell floating elements to create ROI and come to business development.

I mentioned several times on the seasteading forums that i am looking for strong partnership to do the first steps quickly - as it looks there is no " willing finance muscle" availeable in the audience to get this done. My phone did not ring and the e-mail did not pop up a let's partner - message.

So i have to do this obviously by my own means working with local partnerships in a grassroot approach. Maybe the partnership approach from U.S.A, Club Med, Dubai, Trump and co. comes later when the business is more obvious.

What i have to show so far seems not to be enough to give me an option in what world area i want to establish business - so it will be cartagena grassroot for a while i assume.

identify and work the limiting factor (link) /home/

emmettvm

On the topic of a "seasteading pioneer goods provider" what kind of packages would you have in mind OTHER than the platform?  Desalination and purification kits?  Foldable self-watering containers for a small patch (1 square meter per) of growing space for herbs and some veggies?  Solar water heaters?  Its getting late here, and I havent put a great deal of thought into this yet, so Im short on ideas, but I was wondering what you had thought of for this sort of thing.

The most important thing is probably identify and work the limiting factor correctly. As far as i see it nobody is limited in his  seasteading venture at this very moment because he can not get freshwater and desalination kits, water containers, herbs and veggies, or solar heaters...

I have the impression that we all are stuck because of the same reason - we can not afford a "floating turn key lifestyle platform" as offered by the yacht industy to get our life aquatic.   Settlement needs Settlers and those are people of medium low financial means. So as long as we can not enable people to float out at moderate cost - it will not happen.

If we set appart our cultural blindness and look at "cross cultural float outs" we can see that the Moken people float out in boats they can build themselfs repair themselfs, in a similar way the pioneers that went west, did it in wagoons they could build locally - repair underway.

So one of the key factors would be to keep the basic toolkit simple. Things like aquapods, desalination solutions, scuba gear, will come handy to interact with the ocean and get a living out of it.

Although it may sound weird at first sight a concrete sub is easy repair technology and concrete shell building in general is something that can be implemented easier than any other material including the wooden moken boats.

The gear that the moken use are basic dive masks (self fabricated) netting, spears, self fabricated outboard motors, etc...

In some way the moken are early technology embracers - they took scuba technology and adapted the mask to make it with materials from their ambient (wood and glass) - they took the gas engine but stripped it from the complicated high tech parts of an outboard motor and simplified the transmission and propeller.

So this is a pattern we should follow - take what is there - but simplyfy and make it easy repair - stay independent from "send item to the nearest authorized repair shop" services.

seasteader start up kit - development matrix (comment) /home/

emmettvm

On the topic of a "seasteading pioneer goods provider" what kind of packages would you have in mind OTHER than the platform?

The most important thing "other than platform/floating living space" is probably to provide the MATRIX where seasteading can develop. I discussed with Ocean a hypothetic firm called seasteading Inc. that would provide things that the development company provides for land settle developments. Among those a construction licence for the building lot,  a third party interference free space where the builder can create his home, supply, like phone, water, electricity,   a access road and bus shuttle service, economic building material sources like cement providers with special offer for the development. Like minded individuals to ask for advise, favorable builder credit and quotes...

We had that universe of thoughts at the Seasteading Outpost Belize forum. Belize did not take off due to the cost and difficulty to transfer our life and work from where we are now to belize. But the idea of creating a "dedicated development" was certainly acertive...

Seasteading Inc would do what the cultural ambient is doing for the moken. Take away the "lonley seasteader" burden and make it a community effort. It would work like the historic example of the East India Company or the railroad company for the settlement of the american wild west.

lets keep "politics" low and "crank out something" high (comment) /home/

In general it might create a better ambient for making seasteading a reality if we keep politics low and crank out practical solutions high in the start up approach...

The reason why the approach "lets pick a spot on the map and do it there" did not work, is that people do have lifes that are economically and socially connected to a spot, one thing is to go for vacations - another to give up your local support base.

If a company wants to have a manager in another country it has to pay a "transfer package" that allows the man to live while he sets roots in new territory. The personal financial, and social cost of such a transfer is high.

It is probably not something that you would do "upfront" just to get dropped with a bag and a short budget on a beach to be left alone with the task to cranc something out.

This would leave you way to vulnerable to all kind of unpredictable interference to give you a realistic chance to success.

On the other hand if Sir Richard Branson gives us a beach on necker island and a back up package i am in...

Ready to lauch the most incredible floating ocean colonizing tourism project you can imagine. As long as a "matrix provider" like seasteading inc. who can provide transfer packages to "seasteading managers" does not exist, i am obviously allone with my effort - and my best shot to cranc something out, the press will talk about, is cooperating in a local float out project where i live just now...

seasteading starter kit suggestions (link) /home/

I have suggested 3 seasteading starter solutions on this thread so far:

The catamaran float / The plate float out / The real estate squaremeter deal / The Captain Nemo float out

The catamaran float is a great solution for a mobile project, the plate would do great as a beerstead, the real estate if you are in a industrial area and can get the interest of a local land based real estate developer. It all depends on your personal local mix of project development factors which solution is "best"...

I will paint in detail the further solutions for a start up i have in mind - among those the "turn key floating house", the "captain nemo float out",  the "exotic submerged bubble hotel" , etc...

The Captain Nemo float out (link) /home/

Until now we had the following seasteading start up suggestions:

The catamaran float / The plate float out / The real estate squaremeter deal / The Captain Nemo float out

Let me continue to propose the "captain nemo float out" it is basicly building a "better yacht" that can stay in open ocean for long periods of time.

Yachts can not stay in open ocean for long periods of time as the wave action makes staying there quite uncomfortable.

Yachts are also built from materials that impose "light building" as principal design feature. This goes bad with basic seasteading needs like big tank volumes and store of big amounts of goods like food, spare parts, tools, fuel, water and similar.

In general a yacht is built for living in a marina and make short trips of no more than a few days crossing open water in favorable weather conditions.

We propose (and already tested) a vehicle that is the technical equivlent of a whale. A very heavy almost completly submerged body wandering worldwide at a speed of 7 knots with incredible low energy needs, capeable to live on resouces and opportunities that come up seasonally at thousands of miles distance.

This vehicle would be about "apartment size" hold a adequate living space for a single family be equally comfortable in harbor or at open sea, avoiding wave movements by cruising most of the time in snorkel mode. It would provide "leave coffee cup on the table comfort" even in the worst imaginable sea conditions.

It would be the "workhorse" of a new generation of ocean explorers and settlers who engage in activities like open water pod fishfarming, tuna rearing, wreck salvage, scuba tourism, mineral explotation, scientific data collection, tourism and similar.

This workhorse would be almost completly independent of  infrastructure.

It would allow to have a lifestyle that is somewhere halfway between a yachtie, the moken, and captain nemo. It would allow to paricipate in existing yachting, use existing harbor and boating infrastructure when available. But on the long run it would work best as mobile  complement of oceanic cities as proposed by seasteading.

Seasteading start up suggestion exotic bubble hotel (link) /home/
So far we had the following 4 start up suggestions that can be realized with a budget frame of 50-100 k USD.

The catamaran float / The plate float out / The real estate squaremeter deal / The Captain Nemo float out

Let me propose the bubble hotel.

It bases on the fact that there is a booming market for exotic hotel vacations. It ranges from Ice hotels, to tree hotels, and there is even a underwater hotel in use as we speak. Jules Underwater Lodge in Florida.  There has been big intents of underwater mega hotels in dubai and fiji that folded due problems on the finance front. So it seems logical to start with a single room or a underwater cabin-pod on a low scale and take it from there.

end of semisub idea ? (link) /home/

i_is_j_smith wrote:

"The Drug Trafficking Vessel Interdiction Assistance Act, which became law in October, now allows the United States to prosecute someone for merely being on board a semisub. Earlier this month, the first semisub crew members were convicted under this law..."

Oh well.  So much for the semi-sub seastead idea...

The question is to what extent can United States allow itself, and is willing to allow itself, undercutting international legal standards like burden of proove, fair trial, (claiming terrorist and drug hunting needs) ...we will see what kind of practice comes out at the end...the discussion is not over, it is barley opened.

In the meanwhile it is probably indicated to avoid certain sea areas where a "not declared war" of this kind is going on with any yacht.

But this does not mean the "end of the semi-substead idea" - it does just mean that autopropelled semi-substeads (like our project) are well advised to avoid (for now) operating in certain limited sea areas in unanounced international voyages.

Affortunatly the world oceans are big and the reach of such acts is limited . I am also a optimist and quite sure, that the cutting down of civil rights, for enable terrorist and drug hunt efforts, is a temporal phenomena that will be considered a "legal dead end" quickly.

Already in its first version there is a clear statement that this is by no means pointed against explorers, and registered and flagged private subs - as our project is registered, there should be no problem. The problem lies most of all in the capability of a the coast guard triggerman to differentiate in the high seas in bad weather and "interprete the rulings and limits correctly".

For now this political development is compromizing to a certain extent our original plan to deliver the hull autopropelled via panama canal to california.

It is certainly not recommended to confront a coast guard triggerman with an imagine like that and trust that he will diferentiate it correctly as "registered civil submersible yacht not participating in that non declared war".

What concerns the declaration of the "end of the semisub idea" - i don't think that all those people from the pictures below will be jailed without a process for "being found on a semisubmersible artefact" - do you?

current turbine (link) /home/

Current turbine. In a similar way as offshore wind farms are becoming important energy production assets, submerged current turbines have been tested and installed successfully. Current turbines based on cocrete hulls like the one in the picture below can be an elegant solution. It would merey be changing the propeller blades to a much bigger version and change the engine with a generator. Access to the turbine for generator maintenance could be done by a tubular structure from the surface.

The installation could be made almost entirely submerged for little impact on ship traffic and no disturbance by weather and waves. The concrete hull allows a maintenance free service life of the turbine body of several decades - you can not achive that in steel - putting the whole turbine into a drydock for gritblasting is extremly expensive. This turbine can be towed to the anchor location like a submarine and get the turbine blades installed by divers.

Improving Ecuador floating Coast Guard Base (link) /home/

The Ecuador floating coast guard base takes floating houses on concrete bases out of the protected space of rivers, lakes, and marina installations and puts the concept into unprotected open water.

The videos of the base ( launch / wave motion / building ) suggest that the wave movements are sufficiently stable for marine infantry but not for civil housing. It also sacrifices completly the concept of mobility. For mobility and wave response a bow on the structure would be an improvement - a concept that has brought "maximizing the beam" and "featuring a bow" as far as you can get is the "triangular flat float" best represented by the "WHY yacht"

I would start with a triangular concrete flat float and build it up from there - instead of a ugly square house i would put some "futuristic concrete shell" as superstructure. The look and feel of the floating home should be something like this (video).

As seen on the Kon-Tiki video, flat floats with a low metacenter, are very stable structures, with a good wave response in general, and nice mobility. (Kon-Tiki)

Cost of ecuadorian base / cost of graving dock / improvements (link) /home/

wohl1917

video Ellmer! Very cool. I don't speak or read Spanish, so how much did that cost the Ecuadorian Costies?

Interresting question, as it was a military proyect i doubth that they have a exact calculation of the cost . The military uses resources like "cost free labor" and "cost free yard installations" that a civilian project can not count with. In general terms the economic base conditions in ecuador are of lack of infrastructure and industry so you would have higher cement cost as in neighboring colombia, construcction of metalic structures and certified welding also tend to be more expensive.

If well mounted a building site as shown in the video can build at a general cost of  331 Euro( 474 USD)/ton structure building for concrete shell.  I would estimate the structure to about 200 ton. To compare a steel structure would come at USD 5,5/kilo. (5.500 USD/ton)

The concrete float can be calculated with a maintenance free service life of a century or two. A steel structure under this conditions will have 2-3 years of maintenance free service life - to keep it going longer (15-20 years) a expensive and intense maintenance shedule including dry docks, grit and sandblasting, is required.

Basicly the military in south america has a "seasteading problem" to solve. Their job requires presence in remote jungle, mangrove, and ocean areas where there is no access road at all, all access can only be done by water. Colombia and Ecuador therefore are developing floating military support bases.

I have been in bahia malaga military base where the colombian pacific interdiction surveillance is located admid what is a endless mangrove jungle swamp area. They have several meters of tidal changes - so beside the access problem the tidal problem forces floating structures for service installations.

No doubth we will see more floating military bases in this area in near future.

Ecuador floating base video1

Ecuador floating base video2

The merit of the ecuadorian floating base is that it takes the floating house concept to open water areas. What we see in video 1 is that the movements are quite unpleasent - so i would suggest to improve the design by increasing the "movement relevant platform diameter" in the sense of the seastar concept with outrigger arms to some 40m diameter which is a acceptable size according to the experience of the Nkossa barge. Seastar arms for increasing the beam is fine when cero mobility is required. For a concept that keeps a mobility option going triangular would be best (link)

breakwater lagoon marina /home/

We have the following suggestions: The catamaran float / The plate float out / The real estate squaremeter deal / The Captain Nemo float out

Breakwater lagoon marina it taking the normal floating marina walkways and breakwaters to the next step and moves the concept a bit farer out near a existing coastal city to provide a harbor, refuel, bait, tackle, and beer to a existing boating and yachting community.

Floating structures of that nature do already exist. Some of them are situated in the protected waters of a bay, others like the ecofisk storage tank from the picture series above operate in extreme unprotected ambient of 30m design wave height.

Ramform confirms 40m beam requirement (link) /home/

TSI is going for ship-shaped seasteads and the ramform is the ship-shape that has been found and tested to be the best suitable shipform for interacting with the ocean and being comfortable in stationary work ambients in open sea.

The ramform combines a broad stable flat float shape in the stern with a ship bow. Interesting that the comfort zone seems to be exactly the 40m beam area predicted on this forum.   So we are speaking of 102 m loa and 40m beam - not exactly a small scale start up - but definitly a possible way to go.

Part of the discussion how beam influences comfort  and how to improve geometric platform shapes like cube shapes are also in the discussion of the ecuatorian coast guard platform and its wave response seen in the following video.

.

More about ramform ships in this pdf file.

All in all structures that are below 40m beam seem to be not comfortable enough due to their wave response. This excludes surface floats below 40m beam very much for seasteading on open ocean and restricts small floats to quiet bays and protected waterspaces.

Only a partially/fully submerged structure can be small and comfortable at the same time in open ocean.
